Mars Vilaubi: Weekend Postcard — Growing Mushrooms at Home

The tree that fell in Photo Editor Mars Vilaubi’s yard was destined for something other than the fire pit.

After working on the photos for Stephen Russell’s new book, The Essential Guide to Cultivating Mushrooms,  I was set on growing some of my own mushrooms.

A small tree went down in our yard a couple of weeks ago, so I cut it up and let the logs age. This weekend I drilled holes and inoculated them with Blue Oyster plug spawn. The whole process was fairly quick and easy and hopefully in six months to a year I’ll have a nice crop of delicious mushrooms.
