National Poultry Day: A Celebration of The Chicken Encyclopedia Blog Tour and Another Giveaway!

Today is National Poultry Day, and here at Storey we’ve found the perfect way to celebrate both the day and the successful completion of The Chicken Encyclopedia Blog Tour — we’re giving away an entire basket of chicken-related goodies! Just our way of saying thank-you to all the fans who’ve followed along with the tour.

We’ve been talking chicken for a little over two weeks now, and while we can’t claim to have covered everything chicken (we’ll leave that to Gail Damerow’s new book!), we’ve covered quite a bit — from how to raise happy chickens to how to keep urban chickens, from how to prevent frostbite to how to recognize toxic plants. We’ve even solved a mystery or two and discovered which breeds we’d want with us in case of a zombie apocalypse!

The Chicken Encylopedia by Gail Damerow

Here's a big shout-out to our tour's bloggers — if you haven't stopped by their blogs yet, what are you waiting for?

3/2 For the Love of Chickens
3/3 Vintage Garden Gal
3/4 The Garden Roof Coop
3/5 Common Weeder
3/6 Chickens in the Road
3/7 Garden Rant
3/8 Fresh Eggs Daily
3/9 My Pet Chicken Blog
3/10 Coop Thoughts
3/11 BoHo Farm and Home
3/12 Happy Chickens Lay Healthy Eggs
3/13 A Charlotte Garden
3/14 Farm Fresh Fun
3/15 The HenCam
3/16 Life on a Southern Farm
3/17 ADozenGirlz, the Chicken Chick™
3/18 North Coast Gardening

We’d also like to thank The Chicken Encyclopedia author Gail Damerow for taking the time to answer questions from a few of our bloggers and letting us all get to know her and her flock a little bit better. With this new book — and enhanced by the interviews during the tour — Gail has proven once again that she really is a chicken expert extraordinaire! As stated by Jd Belanger of Backyard Poultry magazine, “Chickens. Encyclopedia. Gail Damerow. What more needs to be said?”

“Wait!” you say, “what about that chicken basket giveaway? What can I win, and how can I win it!?”

Thanks to our blogging friends and our friends over at Backyard Poultry, the chicken basket comes with all sorts of fun — and handy — items. In addition to a signed copy of The Chicken Encyclopedia, Storey is also including a signed copy of Chick Days by Jenna Woginrich and The Fresh Egg Cookbook by Jennifer Trainer Thompson, as well as an “I’m a Chick Magnet” refrigerator magnet and a chicken-breed poster. Kathy Mormino, from ADozenGirlz, The Chicken Chick™, has donated a gift certificate for custom egg carton labels and a super-cute “Got Eggs?” T-shirt. Fellow blogger Lisa from Fresh Eggs Daily has donated a rustic handpainted mailbox sign (with hanging chalkboard) and a chicken window decal. And we top it all off with For the Love of Poultry, a special anthology of the entire first year of Backyard Poultry magazine!

A basket full of chicken goodies!
And here’s the best news — there are two ways to win, because we’re giving away two complete baskets! The first basket will be for Storey’s blog and social media followers. Just enter a comment below (tell us what you love about chickens!), or comment on the corresponding Facebook post. We will randomly draw a winner from all entries on Monday, March 26. (Please note: the contest is open to U.S. residents only. Please leave an email address so we can contact you should you win.)

If you’d like to enter a second time, head on over to the Mother Earth News Fair blog or Facebook page, and submit your entry there as well — they are giving away our other basket to one of their fans (and there’s no reason you can’t be fans with us both!).

Here’s wishing Gail success with her new book, The Chicken Encyclopedia, and here’s wishing you a happy National Poultry Day!

as a rookie chicken keeper, this giveaway would be so helpful!!! I have only had chickens a short while and I had no idea what great personalities they have!!!!! I always joke with my husband and say, "we're going to have less dogs and more chickens!" He calls the chickens "my other dogs" because they follow me around the yard. When I think of my chickens I think of pure joy!!!!

I would love to win a basket of chicken goodies! I love my chickens. I have been keeping them for a little over a year now. I can sit outside and watch them for hours on end. They have changed me this past year. Bad days aren't so bad anymore when I get to hang out with them! Their personalities are what keep me mesmerized. I never know what I am walking into when I get out to the coop. My husband already had to add an addition, since I got more chicks this spring. In a way, they have brought my familty closer to each other, and that is priceless! Thank you for the chance to win!

I love chickens for all the reasons possible... the fresh eggs! I used to hate eggs. Never have liked them...until I tasted a fresh egg. Now I eat eggs at least twice a week!
...the cuteness factor - I love my silkies! ...then there happens to be free fertilizer (once composted) and pest management! I love chickens!

I am SO excited to see how many people are taking an interest in raising chickens! I've been trying to promote self-sufficiency for a while now and it really seemed that everyone was just too happy to buy their poultry and eggs from the supermarket. It makes my heart smile to know that people are finally seeing the joys and benefits of raising our own chickens, planting gardens and trying to find ways of living a bit more sufficiently! Blogs like yours are a big contributor to spreading the knowledge and encouragement! Thanks so much!

Last year we got our first chicks (Black Copper Marans) and we have 9 chicks (Barred Rock, Silver-Laced Wyandotte, and Ameracauna) in the brooder right now. I am constantly amazed by their charming personalities and the joy they bring us everyday! From my rooster's crows (mostly when I am walking away from the coop) to the babies' sense of adventure...I can't imagine our lives without them! My phone is filled with pictures of our chickens...that I show friends and strangers alike!

Happy Poultry Day!

I have enjoyed the blog tour very much and would love to be entered for the giveaway. I can not have chickens at this time, but hope to in the future. So for now, I have to enjoy my sisters flock. I love to watch them scratch in the grass for bugs and I especially love all their different colors and personalities.

I've been a back yard keeper for nearly 4 years now. We're waiting for the Wyoming winter to subside some before ordering new "babies". Can't wait! The girls provide endless entertainment and there is NOTHING like a fresh egg.

I would love to be entered into the giveaway. I'm still new to being a chicken mom and what started as a little 2-chicken hobby has grown into a 10-chicken hobby and love for those goofy birds. It's a learning process and winning this basket would help with my learning.

I love their one-eyed side stare as I inspect the coop.

The thing I love most about chickens is how they run with sheer glee to greet me when I come out of the house! They are just so sociable and gregarious!

I love how chickens have such high self-esteem. Mine will charge my cats, with their wings outstretched, scaring the cats away from their cat food so the chickens can eat it (if I forget to put it up out of their reach, since it's not good for them). To add drama to the episode, the hens also like to shower the cats with grit and dirt from their dust baths! It is so hilarious to watch!

Awesome prize! I've also enjoyed the book tour! I'll have to get the book if I'm not lucky enough to win it! thanks for the chance!

You should edit your comment or find out what the problem is. Mother Earth News Fair is not giving away a basket. They referred us back to you when we posted. At least that's what happened when I used the links you gave.

The bolg tour Storey hosted was very fun to follow. It would be great to win this prize package. I have been following this blog post from the begining and have enjoyed hearing all the different perspectives on the "Chicken Encyclopedia". I have done a lot of research on chickens, but getting even more books on chickens would be a huge improvement to my knowledge on chickens. My hatching eggs hatched today, so I have had a great National Poultry Day, but winning this package would be Fantastic! :)

Awesome blog tour! My Google reader is filling up ;) We've had chickens for a little under a year and I only have two books as sources. Could really use another accurate resource. Thanks again!

I also live in one of those areas that just don't think having chickens in your backyard is a good idea. I will be working with some wonderful people this year trying to change that and I know the day will come. So for now reading anything and everything about chickens is what is keeping this childhood past time alive. It would awesome to win this amazing collection of books and the blog tour was a great idea!

I love the soft cooing noises my sleepy chickens make, after fighting to get my preschooler and toddler to bed, nothing is as soothing as going out to check on the hens, already happily sleeping on their roost with no arguing or begging for one more book... ;)
