A Closet Garden Update

Hey! Remember that teeny-tiny hydroponic garden that my son is creating in his closet? The other day I wandered in to do some mom thing like look at the laundry that's been sitting on his dresser for more than three days (and who the heck does he think puts laundry away, the laundry fairy? It's not like he has a personal maid who . . .) oh, oops. Carried away by mom-ness. Anyway, when I came in, the entire room smelled like a tomato vine, and I threw open the closet door to find this!

I'm not sure you can tell from the angle of the photo, but the pot is now on a very low support, less than six inches high, and the tomatoes are growing wild. We actually spent some time the day before this photo was taken staking them so they didn't topple over. They're almost waist-high to me (although I am what you might call "petite") and have some winsome little bud-flowers on them, as seen here:


The peppers are growing nicely as well, although lower to the ground:


But I must sadly report that the cilantro is kaput. Well, almost, but it's not looking good. That might be a better plant for a window box. The hydroponic garden is flourishing, much to the delight of all except the dog, who is completely weirded out that Ben's closet is bubbling all the time. Hopefully, in a few months I'll be able to write a post about a delicious salsa that Ben made using his own tomatoes and peppers. Stay tuned.
