Five Friday Favorites: Maple Makes the News

It’s been a while since we’ve done a Five Friday Favorites post, and since maple is our theme this week, we thought it would be timely to point out that there’s plenty of chatter about our favorite seasonal treat in the news these days. Happy Friday!

Have you heard about the Great Maple Syrup Heist? Smugglers, search warrants, siphoning…we could go on, but Lucas Adams, whose wonderful farm journal drawings we’ve admired before, has done an illustrated account. (via Modern Farmer)

A movie-worthy maple crime: We’re not so sure about the casting choice, but Jason Segel is set to star in a comedy based on the aforementioned heist in a role “that’s nonetheless sure to be the actor’s sappiest to date.” (via Grub Street)

All A’s: If you’ve found yourself in the aisle of the grocery store pondering the difference between Grade A and Grade B syrup, rest assured: Vermont is gradually doing away with “B” – at least, on the label.  (via The Kitchn)

From the Ground Up: Researchers make a discovery that could turn the future of maple syrup harvesting on its head. (via NPR The Salt)

We’ve covered a few maple recipes on the blog this week. Not enough to satisfy your maple craving? Here are a few more options, savory and sweet. (via NPR Kitchen Window)

I'm sorry to hear that Vermont is doing away with their syrup grades. There is a difference between A and B. B is darker and heartier tasting. A, is more delicate. Which is better is a matter of taste and recipe requirements, but generally, there's less A and it usually garners a premium price. Sounds to me as if they're going to mix the two. That means less choice and probably, as always happens, higher price point. Sigh. E Tu Vermont?
