Zan Davies with Heidi, and fellow volunteer, Marc |
As a volunteer with Equus Therapeutic in Lanesborough, Massachusetts, I spend most Saturdays grooming and tacking horses for lessons and leading them for the kids who need that helping hand.
The children (and adults) in the program have all kinds of special needs. Whether their challenges are physical or psychological doesn’t matter to me or to the horses. We’re there to help them feel better, to give them confidence, and to make them smile. I think we succeed each and every time.

Heidi gets prepped for the day |
This past Sunday, Equus Therapeutic hosted the Western Massachusetts Special Olympics Fall Equestrian Festival at Wedgewood Stable. I spent the day working with Heidi, one of the Equus horses (and my personal favorite). She and I had four riders competing. We ended the day with riders covered in ribbons and smiles, and Heidi and I were proud and honored to be a part of it.
