Flavorful Pairs, Part 5: Watermelon & Mint

Maryland's Eastern Shore region is the perfect place to grow watermelons because
of the sandy soil, long growing season, and steady, hot temperatures. Will Hales
(pictured above) and his father, Donald, tend 400 acres of the seedless sweet
melons in Salisbury, something the family has been doing successfully for
decades. Will and Donald largely grow the classic oblong watermelons, but they
also produce “personal” watermelons, as the 5- to 7-pound round fruits are called.

Summer Fruit Salad with Mint

This cooling fruit salad is best in the middle of summer, when it’s so hot that you barely want to eat, much less cook. Vary the ingredients according to what’s freshest. If you’re lucky, you might even find the local brown Turkish figs that Sand Hill Farm in Caroline County grows and sells.

8 Servings

Ingredients
2 cups watermelon chunks, seeds removed
1 cup sliced white peaches
1 cup sliced yellow peaches
1 cup cantaloupe chunks or other musk melon variety
1 cup honeydew chunks or other pale-fleshed melon variety
1 cup blackberries
1 cup blueberries or raspberries
1 cup strawberries, hulled and cut in half
½ cup honey
¼ cup lemon juice
½ cup fresh mint leaves, cut into fine ribbons
Crรจme fraรฎche (optional)

Directions
  1. Combine the watermelon, white and yellow peaches, cantaloupe, honeydew, blackberries, blueberries, and strawberries in a large serving bowl, and toss gently.
  2. Heat the honey and lemon juice in a small saucepan over low heat until just at the boiling point, stirring to combine well. Remove from the heat and cool.
  3. Pour the honey mixture over the fruit, and toss to combine. Sprinkle the mint over the fruit salad, and toss. Chill or serve immediately, garnishing with crรจme fraรฎche, if desired.
