A Happy Homesteader

Last month Storey held a Win a Homesteader’s Library Contest, and we received 280 fabulous essays on how our books could help the entrants create their dream homesteads.

We also ran a similar contest, the Homestead Book Collection Contest, at the Mother Earth News Fair in Seven Springs, Pennsylvania, in September. Storey set up boxes at our booth and at other locations around the fair. Fairgoers dropped their names into a box, and after the fair ended three winners were chosen.

Here is a nice follow-up thank-you from one of our Mother Earth News Fair Homestead Book Collection winners:
The books arrived today! I was so happy to tear open the box and browse quickly through the titles — so many good ones. I’ve added them to my reading list and was also thrilled to have some updated editions of books I already have (Storey’s Guide to Raising Dairy Goats and Storey’s Guide to Raising Rabbits), along with others I’ve had on my “wish list.” I’ve included a picture below.
As an aside, I thought I’d mention that I’ve been asked to join a new magazine called Broadway+Thresher  as their Farm and Garden editor; the online version launches November 1 and the print edition next summer. The magazine caters to people moving from the city to the country. I’ll be adding the books you’ve sent me to my reference library and will use them as I write and research stories for the magazine as well as during my day-to-day farm activities.
