The Chicken or the Egg? The Chicken Encyclopedia Blog Tour continues!

Has anyone ever answered the question of which came first, the chicken or the egg? In today's stop on The Chicken Encyclopedia Blog Tour, it's definitely the egg, as we explore incubation as part of Life on a Southern Farm. Apparently, there's a lot more to hatching chicks than just laying the eggs - and if even one element is off (humidity, temperature, sanitation, or ventilation), you run the risk of losing your chicks ...
When my husband (the FarmMan) was using his homemade walk-in incubator to hatch eggs, we could have used The Chicken Encyclopedia for information. We had a few failed attempts due to an old thermometer we were using. The temperature was off a few degrees and that was all it took for some very poor and disappointing hatches. We replaced the thermometer and it wasn't long before we were having basket after basket of cute little baby chicks.
Check out pictures of the walk-in incubator (very cool!) and the baskets of baby chicks (very cute!) over on Georgia Farm Woman's blog, Life on a Southern Farm. Of course while you're there make sure to leave a comment and enter her contest to win a copy of Gail Damerow's The Chicken Encyclopedia!

There's still a couple more blogs in our tour, so make sure to visit us over the weekend. And don't forget to check in with us on Monday for National Poultry Day and the finale of The Chicken Encyclopedia Blog Tour - we're giving away a big basket of chicken goodies!
